Why Colossians?
Why, with all the letters Paul wrote, should we begin a bible study with the short letter to the Colossians? Think carefully of the situation he faced and the situation in which we stand today.
His was a secular world dominated by Roman law and Greek philosophy. Religion was so unimportant that the emperor was declared to be God. Paul was in prison in Corinth with the new, small Christian family scattered. Paul had never been to Colossae so their personal problems would not color his words. What is this new teaching all about? False teachers abounded but Paul was a well-known, reliable leader according to the Colossian teacher, Epaphras.
In Colossians we find the true faith from an apostle in simple concrete terms for us all in this increasingly secular world, surrounded by a host of varied religious teachings. Christ Jesus, the incarnate Son of God, is God’s truth and life for all mankind. Hear the word of the Lord God!
